The causes of the war according to Siegfried Westphal, German Chief of Staff to the Commander-in-Chief of the Western Armies during 1944 and 1945, explains that the flashpoint of World War II was the Polish-German tension over the ‘Corridor' (East Prussia had been separated from the rest of Germany by the provisions of the Treaty of Versailles) and German demands for the Free City of Danzig to be reincorporated into the Reich, whose population was largely German. According to the same general, in April 1939 the atmosphere became tense when the German government denounced the ‘non-aggression' pact signed with Poland five years earlier and, as the summer progressed, tensions grew.
